Asphalt 7: Heat 1.1.1

Asphalt 7: Heat is the seventh installment in Gameloft's popular Asphalt series of driving games for Android. This version is incredibly polished, with lots of race modes set in beautifully-rendered courses across the world.

Lots of different game modes

The depth of Asphalt 7: Heat is very impressive. You can choose from career, quick play, or multiplayer modes. Within each of these modes there are lots of different ways to play, and gameplay variety is great.

Career mode in Asphalt 7: Heat sees you attempt to progress through a series of cup competitions. There are 13 cups to be unlocked in total, each consisting of four different races. There are different kinds of races within Asphalt 7: Heat, including Normal, Drift, Elimination, Beat 'Em All, Paint Job, and King of the Hill. The gameplay in each of these is different enough to keep your interest levels high.

Progress through the career mode in Asphalt 7: Heat is based around earning money and star points to level up and unlock cars and races. As is the norm with Gameloft games these days, you can purchase stars to 'fast-track' your progress in the game.

If you want a less structured game mode, try Quick Play, where you can enter any kind of race, in any location, racing with any of the vehicles that you've unlocked. Better still, enter the Multiplayer mode and you'll be able to battle it out against a friend over Bluetooth/WiFi, or take on up to five others online.

Take the keys and drive!

Playing Asphalt 7: Heat is a real delight, not least because of its fluid control system. The default control system is based around tilting your device to steer, tapping the left of the screen to brake and the right side to apply nitro. It works very well, but if you want to change the controls in Asphalt 7: Heat you can, and there are four systems to choose from.

Races in Asphalt 7: Heat are thrilling to say the least, and the inclusion of collectible items and insane nitros makes it all the more enjoyable. However, driving at high speeds through some of the more elaborate courses can provoke lag at times, and we experienced this a few times testing on the HTC Sensation.

Sleek graphics and sound

The range of vehicles you can unlock in Asphalt 7: Heat is impressive. Vehicles are tiered in seven sets of similarly-powered cars, ranging from the likes of the Mini and Range Rover in the first tier, to supercars such as the Ferrari FFX and Bugati Veyron in the upper tier. You can even race in the DeLorean from the Back to the Future movies!

Graphically, Asphalt 7: Heat is without doubt the best of the series so far, and the visuals are as good as anything on the Android platform to date, including Firemint's Real Racing 2. The cars look awesome, but it's the backdrops that really take your breath away in Asphalt 7: Heat. There are 15 different stunningly-recreated city and countryside courses set in a diverse range of locations including Hawaii, London, Havana, Tokyo, LA, The Alps, and Reykjavik.

The gold standard

Even with these minor flaws, Asphalt 7: Heat is up there with the best racing games for Android, thanks to its pristine graphics and huge gameplay.

Asphalt 8: Airborne 1.4.1e

Asphalt 8: Airborne marks the return of the crazy arcade racer in this even more spectacular new version. Included are a new game engine, cars and environments, a complex career mode, multiplayer and slo-mo races worthy of action films. You're going to love it!

47 cars over 9 circuits

In this 8th installment of the Asphalt series, Gameloft has gone above and beyond by updating 80% of the fleet with brand new cars. Asphalt 8: Airborne's fancier models aren't available at the start, but you can unlock them as you win circuits and earn points (or shell out cash if you can't wait that long). The vehicles are, on the whole, very well designed and true to the originals. You can collect up to 47 in total and repaint them in various colors.

As for the environments, Asphalt 8: Airborne takes you to 9 new destinations that include Venice, London, Barcelona, Tokyo, and Monaco, as well as the Nevada desert, French Guyana, Iceland, and the Alps. There are hidden shortcuts to be discovered that help you gain on your opponents.

As for game modes, there's first and foremost a complex career mode that lasts eight racing seasons and 180 events. Next is a quick race mode with six solo race types (classic, elimination, duel, ejection, infection, and slalom). And, finally, there's a multiplayer mode for online playwith up to eight players, and the highlight: multiplayer mode played against friends over WiFi. A ranking system displays your world ranking and how you compare to your friends.

A decidedly arcade-style gameplay

The Asphalt 8: Airborne gameplay is the same as in previous versions and is still arcade-style. You can still use Nitro to boost your speed, you can always drift for miles, many items dot the road, etc. The big change in Asphalt 8: Airborne is the addition of springboards scattered around the tracks. They enable you to take flight and perform spectacular stunts in the air. The Asphalt 8: Airborne courses also climb into the air, hence the name Airborne, chosen for this version.

To control the cars, you can choose different combinations. Use commands entirely from the screen, the accelerometer on your device to steer the vehicles, or both at the same time.

New graphics engine and punchy music

As for the graphics, Asphalt 8: Airborne is as good as before and even better, with detailed universes and lighting effects that are quite impressive. The new physics engine shows what it can do when slowing down for collisions with competitors, and when debris is swirling on the screen.

All we need is music that can keep up with the fast pace of the races in Asphalt 8: Airborne. Say no more: there are three styles of music, each more catchy than the next and make you want to smash everything on the road.

What's new: Test drive the Lykan 'hypercar'

Asphalt 8: Airborne now gives you the chance to drive one of the world's most exclusive cars, the Lykan HyperSport. The Lykan is the most expensive car in production, and its features include embedded diamonds in the headlights. There are only seven Lykan cars available in the world. So, let's face it, getting the car in Asphalt 8 is the closest you'll come to a Lykan!

A game that keeps the Asphalt tradition alive

Overall, Asphalt 8: Airborne has changed very little from the previous version, with the same philosophy and gameplay as before. What's changed are the environments and cars, the even more spectacular slow motion, and springboards located around the circuit.

Fans of Asphalt and arcade racing games won't be disappointed by Asphalt 8: Airborne, which is still one of the finest games in the mobile and tablet category, along with Real Racing 3. Asphalt 8: Airborne guarantees hours of fun while you take part in many solo or multiplayer competitions!
